Kansas State student wins Rhodes Scholarship
Jonathan Winkler of Wichita, a Kansas State University senior majoring in English, physics, and math, is among 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholars. The first KSU winner since 1991, Winkler will study at Oxford with a $40,000 to $60,000 award.

Central students rally for food drive and activities
Central’s Student Council and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce collected 2625 cans for Penn House with doughnuts for volunteers. The Can-Can All-School Dance occurred Nov 21, and class winners were named in the first hour competition. KU flute professor John Boulton and colleagues performed at Liberty Memorial Auditorium, presenting works by Gwendolyn Brooks and Lorca with Crumb’s arrangements. American Education Week included doughnuts for all, Apple Pie Reception for staff, and an all-school assembly honoring academics. Jeanette Armstrong received a $2000 grant for after-school programs at Central.
