Supreme Court drops vehicle tax suit to district court
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled the proper venue for refunds on 1990 motor vehicle taxes is district court, not the high court. The suit seeks more than 60 million in overcharges across 77 counties, including Johnson, Sedgwick, and Douglas, with refunds tied to using 1989 mill levies rather than 1988. The decision allows refiling in any affected county's district court.

KBI computer praised despite low early identifications
Deputy director Steven Starr defends the Kansas Bureau of Investigation fingerprint computer as promising despite only 17 identifications since September. Lawrence detective John Lewis credits the system with narrowing cases and saving investigation time, while officials confirm manual checks follow any match. The device stores ten and latent prints and compares them to aid arrests, with two major cases already yielding breakthroughs.
