896 WANT JOBS HERE AT EMPLOYMENT OFFICE
In Lawrence during the week 896 applicants sought work at the United States Popeye Service office. Of these 500 were men with 11 veterans and 396 were women. Employers hired 30 workers, 17 men and 13 women, while 78 were referred to openings. Only 37 openings remained, mostly unskilled or domestic labor, with 23 men and 14 women sought. Office manager Barnard urged employers to list jobs so qualified workers can be matched. In Chicago a gun battle left one dead and another wounded as detectives pursued eight gunmen after several robberies and a planned payroll holdup.
