Barghouti Threatens Abbas In Palestinian Election
Opinion polls released Monday show jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti challenging mainstream candidate Mahmoud Abbas in the January 9 election to replace Yasser Arafat. Barghouti is serving five life terms in an Israeli prison for deadly attacks, and insiders say he may withdraw if Abbas offers reform promises. Ukraine talks promise to amend electoral laws in Kiev
Ukrainian rivals reached a framework to fix election laws before the rerun of the disputed presidential vote while remaining split over constitutional reforms to curb presidential powers. President Kuchma agreed to reshuffle the Central Election Commission amid fraud accusations, with Yanukovych confident of victory and Yushchenko opposing limits on presidential power. European mediators aided six hour talks as Yushchenko allies moved toward a simultaneous vote on electoral changes and constitutional amendments, though the deal faced potential collapse at parliament.
