Public meeting probes use of city funds

Spence Named Assistant Fire Chief In Lawrence

Assistant chief LeRoy Spence of the Lawrence Fire Department has been named assistant fire chief by Fire Chief John Kasberger. Spence, 44, has served since 1949 with three and a half years in the Navy, was promoted to captain in 1958, and will supervise department operations and lead in the chief’s absence. He and his wife Helen reside at 2443 Ark.

Cities Service says higher gas rate won’t raise customer bills

Cities Service Gas Co. says the Federal Power Commission’s base gas rate rise from 42 to 50 cents per thousand cubic feet will not trigger rate hikes for customers. A spokesman, Harry Ford of Oklahoma City, notes the increase still won’t let interstate pipelines outbid intrastate rivals not under FPC regulation. The higher rate applies to gas from wells started after January 1, 1973, and gas entering interstate commerce since that date.
