Freedom comes for Death Row inmate in 1957 slaying case
Edgar H. Smith Jr. admitted bludgeoning 15 year old Victoria Zielinski in Bergen County in 1957. A federal appeals court overturned his conviction due to coerced confession. Judge Morris Pashman allowed a plea of no defense, setting 25 to 30 year sentence with credit for time served and probation. Smith, 38, was freed after 14 years and 9 months in custody. Independent Postal System of America halted from selling stamps
