A passenger train overland limited number 209 collided head on with a freight train near Rock Springs Wyoming. Nine people died and many were injured as engines and cars were destroyed. The accident raised questions about dispatch orders and safety as survivors were taken to the nearby state hospital.
Advices from Odessa and Kharkoff describe a brutal incident at Hovoanchina in the Saratofl province where General Sakharoff with Cossacks and troops beat and tortured peasants after demanding surrender of leaders. The village elder was silenced by force as soldiers, many intoxicated, tortured residents. thirty three peasants suffered severe mistreatment. Leavenworth Kansas December 7 Mayor Evarhardy vetoed an ordinance granting Leavenworth Light and Heating Co a gas supply contract at 23 cents per cubic foot. The veto was sustained by four council members amid loud citizen applause as the mayor cited high rates and unsatisfactory terms.
Washington official Frantz, recently urged by the president to govern Oklahoma, released a statement opposing a prohibition clause in the organic act for statehood of Oklahoma and Indian Territory. He notes broad public opposition and quotes prominent territorial leaders wary of federal interference on liquor.
In Qirard Kansas a woman captured after a five day railway coach hold up attempted to escape from sheriff’s custody by climbing a window but was pulled back. St. Petersburg dispatch reports waning faith in the government’s ability to weather the revolution. Witte appears powerless to meet new dangers as mutinies among troops reappear and unrest spreads nationwide.
Despatches from Lemberg indicate large numbers of Russian refugees are dying daily. An official count shows 2,000 killed in Odessa since the troubles began. Reports from Bucharest describe Moscow and Nikolayev facing water and bread shortages, hunger, and meat scarcity. Nearly all non Jewish homes in Rostov have been destroyed.
London dispatch reports Lieutenant General Saknard former minister of war assassinated in Trapatch on December 5. Details arrive via Kydtkuhnen East Prussia as telegraph lines reach the capital.

In Mitchell South Dakota on December 7 two masked robbers held up a crowd of sixteen men at a Plankleton case. One robber stood guard while the other searched the victims. The robbers obtained several hundred dollars.
A bill to create joint statehood for Oklahoma and Indian Territory and to include New Mexico and Arizona was introduced in the Senate today. The House sponsor is Representative Hamison of Michigan, Washington, D. C. Deg. can.
The Atlantic for December offers a Christmas issue with E S Martin’s “Riches” essay and works by W J Hopkins Alice Brown Caroline Duer Clare Benedict and Rose Young plus Christmas poems by John Bh Tabb Laura Steeger Porter and others. It also presents dramatic essays by James Metcalfe Taleott Williams and Elizabeth Hicks Cracken on suffrage tenements and criticism of German and French literature and a piece on Johnson and My Policy in Brown’s historical series.
The funeral for Richard Petrie occurred at 2 pm from the family home at 103 Lincoln Street in north Lawrence. Twelve indictments allege illegal fencing of government land in Western Kansas. Names withheld pending arrests. Bolas Cattle Company of New Jersey tied to the case with manager H B Bolsa of Kansas City. Company owns about 10 000 acres in Stevens County and about 50 000 acres fenced. A B Lynch and Robert Merton also charged. In Pittsburg Kansas James Jl Beau injured at Brick machine plant when shaft drew him, crushed pelvic bones.
The Jefferson club of Topeka adopts resolutions urging Kansas Democrats to nominate R. W. Blair of Topeka for governor. It notes Topeka’s 6000 Republican majority and that Blair nearly won the mayoral race last spring, within 630 votes.
In York Pennsylvania on December 7 a false report sparked a bank run at the First National Bank with hundreds of small depositors withdrawing funds by noon. Other banks aided customers while businessmen deposited to ease fears.
The senate adjourned at 2 13 in the afternoon. The house rejected Wilbiras amendment fixing canal appropriation at 6 858 333 and adopted an amendment setting it at 811 000 000.

The body of Savannah Figgins arrived in Lawrenas from Gilroy California this afternoon. She was the daughter of J J O Figgins and had worked at the Learnard ranch in California for several years. She died last Friday. Funeral services will be held at Warren Street Baptist Church tomorrow.
Mr J T Shanklin will travel to Kansas City to bring his father's body from Washington for burial here. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 PM from First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Oak Elm, Irony. Henry Shanklin, visiting Lawrence, learned of the death with regret. the elder Shanklin, 81, died by a nervous collapse at his desk, leaving a note of his long, industrious career and desire to maintain his status despite age.
City attorneys prepare to try the university bond dispute next week in district court. If the state is ready the case will go to trial. otherwise the city will seek an earlier date. The city contends bonds were paid and interest seized illegally by the state, while the state argues otherwise.
A topeka report describes a cache of scrap from the battleship Kansis sent to Fort Riley and then forwarded to the Historical Society. An old fireman who wired the ship collected the scrap and transported it to Kansas.
Chicago defendants Hila Deg. 7 William McSwayne and Wilber Cole pleaded guilty today to conspiring to extort money from Armour & Co. members. Each was sentenced to thirty days in fall for withholding letters they claimed could aid government beef trust prosecutions.
Mrs John I Martin of St Louis wife of Col John I Martin died yesterday in Bloomington. Her husband served as sergeant at arms during the last three national democratic conventions amid wartime campaigns.
Washington December 7 reading of the Panama canal appropriation bill resumed in the House. The first amendment by Williams proposed reducing the appropriation from 16,500,000 to 6,858,333.
