Survivors recall Pearl Harbor memories at KU veterans event

In December 1941 22-year-old Vincent Muirhead planned a quiet day aboard USS Maryland to shoot a hula show. He recalls spotting a Japanese plane 100 feet overhead as war began. Nearby, Darwin Lamkin remembers the Nevada attack and joining Pearl Harbor Survivors Association in Kansas City.

Kennedy School rep seeks to stay open amid consolidation talk

Lawrence students, parents and staff argued for Kennedy and nearby schools as candidates for mergers. Dawn Shew urged keeping Kennedy and pursuing a new shared facility with New York schools, while the consolidation panel weighed options to reduce six proposed sites to three or four within two years. The group plans to review proposals from Hillcrest, Pinckney and Sunset Hill at the next meeting.

Kansas Worst In Nation For Child Insurance Progress 2008 10

A Georgetown study finds Kansas ranked last nationally in insuring children from 2008 through 2010. Kansas saw uninsured children rise to 8.2 percent in 2010 from 7.4 percent in 2008, increasing by 7,853 children to 59,783. Nationwide, uninsured rates fell while poverty rose.
