Utah high schools banished clubs. LGBT group survives
At Salt Lake City East High and across four city schools the 1996 ban on clubs not tied to academics led to disbanded groups from Students Against Drunk Driving to ethnic clubs and hobby clubs. The Gay-Straight Alliance continues as a paid community group under GLSEN while few clubs remain. Students say social ties and school spirit have suffered as teachers note broader social rifts and lost opportunities.
