All-Volunteer Army Setup Discussed at Draft Meeting
CHICAGO AP A national draft conference debated the merits of an all volunteer force. Two economists argued it affordable while a Defense Department planner called it wishful thinking and naive. Harold Wool said costs could reach 17 billion yearly with unemployment shifts. He noted limits to Friedman-Oi estimates and urged continued selective service to keep forces above 2.5 million. About 3.3 million serve now.
