Captain Lyle Armel Dies in the East at 83
Captain Lyle Armel former secretary of the University of Kansas endowment association died yesterday at his Washington DC home from a heart attack. He was 83 and serving as assistant director of the Navy public relations division. A World War I veteran, he held a prominent role in the American Legion and gave major addresses at Legion events nationwide. He last visited Lawrence in October to see his daughter and son in law at 1941 Kentucky Street. Armel was KU class of 1920 and led endowment fundraising noted as spectacular by KU officials. He served in World War II on various transport ships, rising to captain in 1945. Born June 12 1895 in Holton, he attended Baker University and KU after naval reserve service began in 1917. Entombed in naval service until the Armistice, he resumed education postwar and returned to KU work.
