Freak Fire Wounds Vaughn Pontius at Lawrence Clubhouse
Vaughn Chick Pontius a 24 year old greenskeeper at the Lawrence Country Club suffered facial and hand burns and singed hair in a freak accident at the clubhouse noon today. He was resting at his home at 709 Arkansas Street this afternoon and faces several days of bed rest. Pontius and two other men were painting the ballroom ceiling on a scaffold when it broke over a floor register above a furnace. Paint spilled onto the register and flames shot up burning Pontius as he leaned to grab the bucket. The flames also set the scaffold ablaze but a bystander briefed bystander George Brooks used a fire extinguisher to douse the blaze before firefighters arrived with a new engine. Little damage occurred beyond scorched flooring near the register.
