Powell supports Israel but urges restraint in Middle East
Secretary of State Colin Powell voiced qualified support for Israeli retaliation against terror and urged less escalation while meeting Shimon Peres on the eve of a European anti-terror conference. He warned that continued attacks hinder peace and said the U.S. will remain engaged in the region. Powell noted Israel has a right to defend itself but should act only as necessary to prevent further tensions.
