Court Rules Against Sex in Bars and Night Clubs
The Supreme Court in a 6 to 3 decision allows states to suspend liquor licenses for bars featuring explicit sexual performances and indecent entertainment. Justice Rehnquist wrote the majority, upholding California regulations aimed at public welfare and morals amid concerns of sexual conduct near venues serving alcohol. The ruling reverses a 1971 federal court decision that found the rules unconstitutional without proof of obscenity. The court also indicated upcoming actions on high tuition for out-of-state students, federal food stamps for communes residents, and gender-based job ads in newspapers.
