Downtown Lawrence lights to brighten by Thursday

Lawrence plans six light strands per block replacing four as six new poles go up. Workmen aim to finish by Wednesday, completing a two year ten thousand dollar program. The Kansas NFO Zone 6 meeting at Steele's Ranch near Lyndon elected Elmer Bock of Lyon County as Zone 6 committeeman and Oliver Kitchen of Shawnee County as alternate. Zone 6 includes Douglas Osage Wabaunsee Lyon Franklin and Shawnee counties.

Life Pictures Exhibit at Pontiac Dealer Showroom

A Life Magazine photo collection of 38 prints is on display at Oakleaf-Stanley Motors in Pontiac at 1040 Vt. St. The display runs daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Saturday, Dec. 16, before the photos return to cartons for a tour. Life photographers chose personal favorites to form the exhibit titled Favorite Photographs from Life.

Williamstown man Lee Brannock 68 dies at home

Lee Brannock, 68, a Williamstown resident for 19 years and former Union Pacific Railroad foreman, died Monday night at his home. Born February 6, 1893 in De Soto, he leaves a wife Mina, two daughters Helen Kraus and Dorothy Lynn, a son Ronald, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services are Thursday at 2 p.m. at Community Church Williamstown with burial in Mt. Sidney Cemetery Linwood. Hampton Funeral Home of Oskaloosa in charge.

Hahn Named VPI President

Dr. T. Marshall Hahn, dean of arts and sciences at Kansas State University, will become president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute when Dr. Walter S. Newman retires June 30. Newman, 66, has led VPI since 1947 and cited health reasons. Hahn, 35, is a former VPI physics professor who moved to Kansas State in 1959.

Chance Dims for Special Bowl Train from Kansas

Sluggish sales for the Kansas Rice Bluebonnet Bowl on December 16 reduce chances of a dedicated train. A Rock Island spokesman said a special trip will be arranged only if 250 or more reservations materialize. The plan would run from Lawrence to Houston with stops in Topeka and Wichita.

Rotary Program Discussed Here

The Lawrence Rotary Club discussed Rotary International scholarships at Monday's noon meeting. Bill Marcoux and Cecil Buckley of Topeka explained fundraising and selection for one year Rotary Foundation awards. The next awards will be issued in November 1962. 1,453 total awards have been made since inception, including 727 Americans and winners from other countries.
