Convict Brandon of Manslaughter in Topeka Case
Brandon, a Negro, was found guilty by a district court jury of first degree manslaughter in the October 1 1937 death of Russell Kelly a 21 year old University of Kansas senior. The penalty ranges from five to 21 years and has not yet been imposed. Kelly was identified by his fiancee Miss Lela Edlin who was with him the night of September 24 after a minor auto accident near Lake Shawnee. They later went to Kansas City and Kelly died of hemorrhage after hospital care in Lawrence.

Joseph Taggart Dies at 70 Former Kansan and Congressman
Joseph Taggart of Wadsworth Kansas died at the veterans hospital on Saturday from pneumonia. A native of Iowa he moved to Kansas in 1885 and became Wyandotte county attorney after studying law in Salina. He served in Congress for the second district in 1912 and 1914 and later worked with the World War I quartermaster corps and the veterans bureau before returning to Kansas in 1924 to judge on the Kansas court of industrial relations.
