City Engineer B M Babb submitted a list of prospective bidders to WPA headquarters in Topeka for several Lawrence projects. One involves about a mile of sidewalks funded by property owners with WPA labor. Another covers paving Eleventh Street from New Hampshire to Massachusetts and nearby streets including South Park, Twelfth Street, and the 1800 block between New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Emporia reports that coaches and faculty representatives from five conference schools Southwestern University Fort Hays Pittsburg and Emporia Teachers College will hold their annual meeting in Emporia tomorrow night. The gathering will involve coaches and faculty from all five member institutions.
Henry Young of Baldwin, Kansas, 45, was hijacked about 10 pm while driving a truck carrying 12 cattle worth 400 dollars. He was bound, taken to Liberty, Missouri, and released after about five hours. A man named Frank Abel, 25, was arrested in Kansas City claiming involvement as a helper. the second suspect remained at large. The cattle were later reported at Cleary-Rush in St Joseph with a plan for a follow up payment to the capture suspect.

Manila December 4 A bandit and a constabulary guide were killed in a clash with an outlaw band in western Cebu Island. The fight follows a week of encounters with six bandits reported dead last Saturday. Authorities also found decapitated bodies of six kidnap victims linked to the outlaws.
The city council faced whether it should cover board bills for city prisoners in the county jail. County Clerk Plank presented October 67.20 for 33 prisoners and November 84.5 for 34 prisoners, meals at 60 cents daily. The county already paid the sheriff for hoard, no formal city county agreement exists. The issue aims to clarify funding responsibility as to when a police arrest makes a county charge. The council will likely discuss next Monday night.

New York Supreme Court Justice McCook dismissed a $50,000 slander suit by real estate broker Anarles Shankroff against Mayor LaGuardia. He ruled the words bum and faker are not slanderous, clarifying bum does not import a crime or moral turpitude and faker is not slanderous.
Invitations issued by Chancellor E H Lindley invite eastern Kansas and Kansas City religious workers to a one day University event next Tuesday marking four hundred years of the English Bible. Rev. Edgar J Goodspeed will speak at an all University convocation at 10 am on Four Hundred Years of the English Bible. About 300 coal miners go on strike in Burlingame and Scranton territory over wage and scheduling demands. Pickets establish a perimeter as several mines halt operations. Miners seek seven hour day five day week higher wages for loading and day work and increased pay for mining machines under UMWA. Operators resist seven hour week under regional conditions.
Des Moines reports cash registers in town merchants show about 56 million dollars more in sales from April through September 1935 than the same period in 1934. In Dearing Kansas the death of seventh grader Charlotte Lucile Smoley from basilar meningitis led school officials to close Dearing Elementary School for fumigation until Monday. Charlotte, daughter of Charles and Mrs. Smoley, died after a brief illness.
Potato growers from seven counties in the Kaw Valley area will gather next Wednesday December 11 to discuss issues after the annual show was canceled due to a poor summer crop. The morning session in Chamber of Commerce rooms opens at 1 with Dr O H Elmer of Kansas State College at Manhattan speaking on potato seed treatment and rot control. The National Fruit and Vegetable Exchange talk follows. A 12 30 luncheon features Roger Williams and a Haselkell Institute musical program. The afternoon session begins at 1 30 focusing on The New Potato Program Under the AAA with John Taylor and Scott Kelsey speaking.
About twenty Lawrence High School band members, led by director C E Sawhill, depart for Emporia to rehearse with 150 peers from across Kansas for a concert at the Kansas high school band clinic. Clinic director George Wilson of Emporia, with A A Harding of the University of Illinois, will lead the Saturday performance. Members include Ann Murray, Saralou Smart, Letty Mae Dunn, Mary Alice Gorrill, Jeanne Moyer, Betty Bridges, Joe Van Sickle, Clyde Byson, Barbara Edmunds, Arthur Harris, Gene Whetstone, Alice Clayton, Ralph Allen, Jean Astman, Robert Pine, Rudd Russell, Margaret Hyde, Marjorie McCarty, Warren McCall, and Billy Hunzicker. A large group plans to attend the concert.
Archie Miller aged 24 was found guilty by a Pittsburg district court jury after eleven hours of deliberation for the fatal September 2024 shooting of Jerry Cronin a 63 year old filling station proprietor during an attempted holdup. The jury recommended a state reformatory sentence at Hutchinson rather than the penitentiary. Witnesses tied Miller to the car used in the robbery while an eyewitness identified Miller as the driver and another man George Gaines fired the fatal shot. Miller claimed coercion. Miller was arrested in Kansas City three months earlier after a multi state police pursuit.
