Kansans Named Rhodes Scholarship Candidates
Theodore M O Leary of Lawrence and L Alden Brooks of Wichita were selected as Kansas Rhodes Scholarship candidates for the Des Moines district contest on December 9. Fourteen Kansas applicants, plus entrants from Missouri Nebraska Iowa North Dakota and Minnesota, were interviewed by the Kansas committee at the University. The Manhattan, a 705 foot, seven deck liner costing 10 million dollars, was christened in Camden with Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt as sponsor. Captain George Fried will skipper next summer on a service between New York and Hamburg with 1300 passengers and 20 knot speed. Fried earned honors after rescuing 57 men from freighters Antinoe and Florida, gaining royal thanks and a New York welcome. In Tokyo, a new Japanese drive toward Manchuria was announced to target bandits along the Peiping Mukden line amid troop concentrations near Tahushan and Angtaipu. A scouting plane was sent and preparations for troop movement were expected.

Miss Margaret Wolfe dean of women at Friends University Wichita and Dr William J Terry of Chicago spoke at the banquet. Attendees heard eight major nations' stances on disarmament at the Geneva conference.

Yale Wins Round Robin in Eastern Football Tournament
Yale defeated Brown by judges after two 32 minute halves with no score in the final game to win the first round robin tournament in eastern football. Yale also scored the only touchdown in a 6 to 0 win over Holy Cross to qualify for the final. Brown beat Dartmouth in the second preliminary to reach the final. Prize Percheron Raised in County Wins Big Blue Ribbon
Roy Schwalm and his brothers raise pure bred Percherons on the Schwalm estate near Worden. Irene a 2 year old mare from J T Schwalm won the blue ribbon in the Percheron class at the International Livestock Exhibition in Chicago and Roy Schwalm returned to Lawrence with the prize. The Schwalm stables own about thirty Percherons with plans to exhibit twelve next year.

Detroit December 5 AP Lowell R Bayles of Springfield Mass speed flier was killed at 1 pm when his plane struck the ground and burst into flames during another attempt on the land plane speed record at Wayne County Airport. He had earlier reached 281.9 mph in his third try and was on the first leg of his fourth when the craft dipped and rolled, possibly due to a cross wind. Bayles sought to surpass France's Bonnet 278.4 mph mark to win recognition for a new world record.

Probation Granted to Former Banker in Kansas City Case
George T. Guernsey Jr., 73, once with the defunct Comercial National Bank of Independence, Kan, received probation after a 3.5 year sentence on eight counts of violating national banking laws. Alleged Companion of Man Held in U P Robbery

Two Killed in Safety Zone in Kansas City
Miss Ruth Herod aged 18 died from a broken neck after a car veered into a safety zone injuring nine others. Miss Louise Hartl also died minutes after the crash.
