Five-Men Plot to Kidnap Fairview Teacher
Theodore Howard, seven miles southwest of Lawrence, reports a plot by five men to abduct Miss Roberta Stratford, teacher at Fairview district, hold her in Kansas City for 2000 ransom. He was wounded in a confrontation with two white and three black men as he observed the plan in a plum thicket. The five sought to surround the Smoots home and seize Stratford that night. The boy recovered enough to relay the tale to Sheriff Johns after being unconscious until early morning.
