Topeka AP Kansas considers adding a Dwight Eisenhower statue at the Statehouse as part of Capitol Preservation efforts. The proposal centers on honoring the former president, Ike, with a new memorial in the Capitol complex.
The BRIEFLY committee will convene Thursday with an agenda that includes a state Department of Administration presentation on erecting a statue of Dwight D. Eisenhower on the Statehouse grounds. Governor Sam Brownback has pushed the project for about four years. A 2015 Walk of Honor plaque commemorates Eisenhower, who grew up in Abilene, and a small Ike statue fronts the visitor center with a photo and statesman quote.
A study finds Kansas whites dominate the bench with 73 percent of state judges though they are 38 percent of the population, while women and people of color remain underrepresented. National gaps show white men at 58 percent of state judges though 30 percent of population. Kansas lags in gender parity and racial diversity across trial courts.
