Farmland Industries and Far-Mar-Co won overwhelming but advisory support from 2 231 farm coops at Farmland's Kansas City meeting. Binding vote occurs Feb 10–11 by 604 Far-Mar-Co locals in Denver. If approved the merger would take effect Sept 1 next year and place the combined HQ in Kansas City.
Members-elect convene at 10 a.m. Monday to organize the 1977 session as Democrats control the Kansas House for the first time since 1913 and hold their greatest Senate strength since 1915. Party caucuses will name top leaders amid ongoing leadership challenges.
The Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission recommends candidates report campaign expenditures under $1,000, and raise thresholds for reporting to the secretary of state. It also seeks tighter lobbying and conflict of interest rules and cites $40,821 spent in the primary and $534,436 in the general window Aug 4 to Oct 23.
Chuck Alexander of Kansas University placed eighth in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation Journalism Awards Program opening news writing competition. He won for a story on methods to avoid paying traffic fines written as a Wichita Eagle Beacon summer intern. Alexander receives a $200 scholarship with a matching grant to KU School of Journalism.
The Agriculture Department announced no increase in milk price supports for the first quarter of 1977, keeping the rate at 8.26 per 100 pounds used for butter cheese and powdered milk. Earlier in the year the rate had been raised to 8.13 on April 1 and again on Oct 1.
Kansas Attorney General John Small completed an inquiry into Lecompton's land use code finding no violations of state statutes. The investigation centered on possible conflicts of interest involving planner Dick McClanathan and the use of federal funds, which exempted the project from cash-basis constraints. The Lecompton City Council's veto override stands, and the zoning code will take effect after publication.
Mrs. Charles Oldfather of Rt 5 Lawrence will chair the 1977 Douglas County Heart Fund campaign. Announcement by Jesse D. Rising M D president of the Kansas Affiliate of the American Heart Assn. Oldfather will supervise fundraising and assist with county heart unit business. Local aides include Mrs Martin Dickinson and Mrs Dale Scannell as area chairs, Max Falkenstein, Mrs Walter Morton, and others managing events and rural efforts. Lawrence residents Hampton Shirer Mrs Archie Dykes and Robert D Thiry sit on the board of directors.
British composer Benjamin Britten has died at his country home in Aldeburgh at age 63 after weeks of a deteriorating heart condition. Known as a leading 20th century composer with 11 operas including Peter Grimes and A Midsummer Night's Dream, his War Requiem was acclaimed in 1972 as a landmark work.
