Lawrence's Nature Park hosts a compact set of immersive trails close to downtown. The area offers a peaceful, parklike setting with limited seating and no playground equipment, appealing to hikers seeking proximity over amenities.
The park features four trails totaling about 3.4 miles. The White Trail covers 1.1 miles across Baldwin Creek with rocky slopes. The Red Trail is a half mile spur off White. Yellow Trail climbs steeply at the west end and offers park center views in fog. Purple Trail, the newest, extends from Yellow with steeper inclines, challenging even in dry conditions.
Hikers find fairy homes along a trail junction where Yellow meets Purple, sparking imagination. Visible are the foundation of an old building and remnants of an old well. The site is not in the Kansas Historical Society inventory of over 5,000 landmarks.
A corridor of trees lines a trail at Lawrence Nature Park located at 201 N Folks Road. Stones from an old building emerge from the ground. A fairy home is visible on the path, indicating whimsical features along the route.
The Lawrence City Commission will weigh adding 756,550 to support the Lawrence Community Shelter. The shelter would use the funds to expand options and programs. Earlier in January the city had already provided 2,677,699 from Special Alcohol Funds General Funds and American Rescue funds.
A white ex Kansas City area detective Roger Golubski died by a gunshot wound on his home porch as his trial over allegations of sexually assaulting Black women and terrorizing victims was set to begin. Local police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported the case as an apparent suicide.
