An elderly woman lay at Leasthouse on her dresser as a man with a dog is swept away. Frejus hospital, on high ground, labs with injured and shocked survivors. The dam failed at 9 45 p m after spillways opened wider following a helicopter survey warning engineers of danger.
The University Concert Choir will perform five pieces including arrangements by Shaw Parker and Martin Shaw plus Vaughn Williams and Praetorius. The University Symphony Orchestra will play Bach and Beethoven selections. The program ends with Silent Night sung by the audience and a traditional recessional by the choir.
The FAA announced it has suspended until February 1 the requirement that all aboard an airliner above 25 000 feet must use an oxygen mask at all times. The rule is temporarily on hold amid review by the agency.
Mrs Emma Gress 88 of Medicine Lodge died Wednesday in Medicine Lodge Hospital after a long illness. Formerly of Stull, she will be buried at Medicine Lodge Methodist Church after funeral services at 2 pm Friday. Survivors include two daughters, two sons, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews especially Mrs James Brass Mrs N D Messer and Mrs Carl B Althaus of Lawrence.
Funeral services for Mrs Dora Reynolds age 89 will be held at 2 p m Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home. She died at her home on Wednesday morning. Rev Albert F Bramble to officiate. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The report notes few dam burst disasters in the United States. The Johnstown disaster of 1889 killed about 2142 to 2209 people. Other major breaks include 1874 Mill River Valley flood in Massachusetts with 144 deaths and 1928 St Francis Dam collapse near Los Angeles with about 450 fatalities.
Robert Schmidt, ex manager of Lawrence Callery Chemical Co is named plant manager for Darwin Co at a new isocyanates plant in Houston and starts Dec 7. Jerry Mongiello will be production manager and Tony Krol chief chemist at the Houston facility. Schmidt notes Lawrence staff will join him and hints Lawrence may reopen sooner if other plants miss Air Force contracts.

Brazilian air force officers seized several planes and reportedly hijacked a Panair do Brasil DC-4 with 38 passengers and 6 crew aboard en route from Rio de Janeiro to Belem. The airliner was driven off course to Aragarcas. passengers and crew were removed. Four planes were involved, all C47s, with air force officers aboard. The government placed the defense chief in charge as War Minister Lott advised.
An unfair labor practices hearing from a Lawrence Kansas project ended after starting November 9. Ten former Boiler Makers Local 83 members accused the union and Bechtel Corp of blocking them from work on the Missouri electric power plant project. A ruling by the NLRB is expected in a few months.
Panama's ambassador to the United States Ricardo Arias Espinosa said he expects the U S to approve flying the Panamanian flag in the Canal Zone within about 30 days. He returns to active politics in 1960 and believes Washington will grant the request as a symbol of sovereignty.

McALester former physician Ben T. Galbraith is sentenced to life for the 1955 murder of his daughter Sarah Ann five. He already serves life for his wife Kitty’s death. In court he described poisoning his wife and children then setting the house ablaze and fleeing to Norman.
Dr Lawrence Olson a member of the American Universities Field Staff will lecture at Kansas University December 7 through 16. Olson a Harvard PhD and former cultural attaché to the Philippines has published poetry and articles on Japanese affairs. He joined AUFS in 1955 and studied Far Eastern history including a biography of Hara Kei.
The Wakarusa Watershed District holds its next regular meeting at 8 p m on January 5 in the American Legion Hall Richland with a Soil Conservation official as featured speaker. Officials report the district was officially organized Monday night with officers and directors elected and future meetings to focus on organization. President Carter Anderson said a constitution and bylaws are the next step.
A Kansas University woman employe told police she was assaulted early Wednesday night while walking on Thirteenth Street between Tennessee and Ohio. She described the assailant as a white male about 18, five eight, wearing tight blue jeans and a dark jacket. He grabbed her and tried to drag her off the sidewalk. she bit him as he fled.
The FCC directs 5,236 stations to file sworn reports by Jan. 4 on payola practices since Nov. 1, 1958. The action targets paid plugs not identified as commercial and outlines possible penalties, while FCC and FTC probes broaden into payoffs to disc jockeys and rigged quiz shows.

ATCHISON AP A Kansas Democratic aim to raise total Legislature seats to at least 100 is announced by state party chairman Frank Theis at a second senatorial district rally. The plan seeks 75 House members and 25 senators to give Democrats control of both chambers. Democrats hold 64 seats overall with 56 in the House and eight in the Senate.
In the Courts CRIMINAL CASES County Court Willis Albert Holt of 1600 W 4th St fined 50 dollars and costs for drunk on a public highway. County Court Lawrence La Verne Fiss of 1733 Miller Dr fined 10 dollars for speeding. Jerry Mason of Eu dora fined 10 dollars for speeding. William LeRoy Burd of Route 1 Lecompton fined 10 dollars for failure to yield the right of way.
A minor fire in a sub-basement storage room at Kansas University's Strong Hall was extinguished by the Lawrence Fire Department shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday. Negligible damage occurred to student voting booths. cause is under investigation per Keith Lawton KU physical plant director.
President Eisenhower issued an order excusing most government employees from duty for half a day on Christmas Eve. The exemption does not apply to workers required to stay on duty for national security reasons.
Hollywood report says Mickey Rooney and Jack Paar resolved their on airing spat after a series of quarrels and reconciliations. Rooney declined a second appearance while Paar praised him, noting Rooney’s talent despite a night of drinking during the first joint show anniversary celebrations.
KU senior Rohlf receives the Art Weaver Scholarship Trophy and the 1959 efficiency award for leadership on and off the field. Chancellor Murphy and Coach Mitchell honor the seven 1959 seniors including Lewis and Rohlf as examples for future KU players.
A Douglas County nominating committee began selecting officers for the 1961 Kansas Centennial celebration. Final approval comes at the January county meeting with hopes for one of the state’s best celebrations due to the county's historical role.
