Gov. Mike Hayden summoned the Legislature to Topeka for a Dec. 8 special session after Atty. Gen. Robert Stephan warned that delaying property tax deadlines administratively could face a court challenge. The move aims to give taxpayers time and let lawmakers pass emergency relief and a bill Hayden will prepare.
Rep. David Miller proposed a special session to address property tax issues after reapportionment and classification. Gov. Hayden, urged by Atty. Gen. Robert Stephan, agreed to call lawmakers to Topeka before the Jan. 8 regular session to consider extending tax deadlines and legal authority questions surrounding the Dec 20 to Jan 16 date. Local legislators including Branson Solbach Charlton and Senator Hayden voiced support.
