Clinic clarifies pending legislation on pesticides
About 200 people attended a pesticide clinic at the Ramada Inn to hear clarifications on state and federal pending legislation. Phase I of the Kansas Pesticide Use Law took effect July 1 1970 and Phase II will enforce January 1 1973 with broad regulatory changes and strict controls on chemical pesticides. Representatives from the EPA outlined current federal rules on application storage and transport while Rep John Vogel and Sen Don Christy explained legislative aspects and fielded questions from farmers and applicators. Christy noted the challenge of crafting laws that permit safe, effective pesticide use and urged public protection through regulation. The Phase II provisions require registration licensing and exams for all commercial applicators and local government applicators, plus criminal enforcement provisions handled by county attorneys and registration of application equipment.
