The W J Small Co division of Archer Daniels Dehydrator Co buys land from Alfred Heck Route 5 for a new dehydration plant as weather clears. Prelim grading started, with construction to continue through winter. The current plant at Lawrence’s Small Dehydrator has faced storm damage and closures, awaiting spring reopening.
Mrs Genevieve McVey 41 and her 13 year old twins Orville Ray and Marvelle May died in a late Monday blaze that destroyed the family grocery store service station and sales barn they operated. Alfred McVey and remaining son Hillery escaped but the two children and mother perished atop living quarters above the shop. Fire origin blamed on a gas heater in a first floor bathroom near the stairway. The family had lived in Blue Mound about five years after moving from Garnett. son Charles served in Moody Air Force Base at Valdosta, Georgia.
Attorney General McGranery ordered a federal grand jury investigation of Johns Hopkins professor Owen Lattimore amid intensified Senate and McCarthy accusations of Communist ties. Lattimore has denied any such links and the pending action follows earlier testimony and a committee transcript review. The investigation is set to begin in the District of Columbia on Thursday December 4.
Farmers from nine states will attend the cornerstone laying for a proposed $16 million nitrogen fertilizer plant east of the city. Charles W Isgrigg, 38, a former Joplin cab driver, pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to a first degree murder charge in the slaying of Deputy Sheriff William Carver on June 23. He also withdrew not guilty pleas to felonious assault burglary and grand larceny.

She cites six furnished and four unfurnished units on her list, with rents from 60 to 85 dollars, and notes many options are out of reach for students and families. Lawrence school officials voted to ask Kansas state funds officials for permission to hold a special bond election to raise 917000 for building two more elementary schools and for remodeling Liberty Memorial High School. If approved by the state board, the district may proceed in a general or special election after a published intention. A Citizens Committee backed the request and plans to educate the public on the need for the funds.
