The 1938 Kansas motor car tags became legal yesterday and Douglas County motorists may purchase them now. By February 1 all drivers must display the new black tags with white numbers or face a monthly 50 cent penalty after January 1. County Treasurer A M Gardner said buyers must bring their 1987 registration card and know the title certificate number, while car owners should bring a bill of sale. The first three 1938 tags in Douglas County went to commissioners Chris Schaake, Earl Black, and James Brass. In 1937 Douglas County issued 7 639 passenger tags and 1 355 truck tags. Gardner traveled to Topeka for the induction of Leonard G Hicksman as state vehicle commissioner and to obtain issuing supplies. The new tags have been available at the courthouse since last summer, and officials advise motorists not to rush the process for a week or 80 to allow office changes to take hold.
