A 25 year old Lawrence man Miguel Ayala was arrested in the 300 block of Michigan Street after allegedly firing an assault rifle on several occasions. He faces charges including criminal discharge of a firearm and drug offenses and is held on a 26800 bond. Police found shell casings and seized guns and drugs. an infant was present and given to a relative. The incident followed the Lawrence Police Department’s recent traffic enforcement campaign funded by a Kansas DOT grant.
Bill Edwards to be the Eudora Police Department's new chief after a 30 year career in law enforcement. He will start December 17 replacing interim chief David Burger, with Kaw Valley Bank's Jason Hoover praising his resume and experience. Park City notes Edwards previously served as a mayor in Kansas City, Kansas.
A 64 year old ex Cordley School custodian is hospitalized following a November bicycle SUV crash near 11th and Kentucky streets. Friends say he is progressing toward a full recovery after rapid EMS transport to KU Hospital. He is expected to move to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for rehab. The driver was not ticketed and showed no impairment. Eudora hired Park City Police Chief to lead efforts.
James C. Benimon II, 31, of Lawrence, did not appear at a Douglas County hearing and faces criminal discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon after allegedly firing several shots from a car into another vehicle on February 8 outside an apartment at 1300 Michigan Way. He had posted a 25000 dollar bond and was indicted in August in federal court for failing to register as a sex offender after release from a Kansas prison in 2011.
