Hurricane Carol swept across eastern New England killing 60 people and causing 450 million dollars in damage. It was the first of three storms to affect the region that year, with sun and moon times listed for the day and date for astronomical viewing.
Steven Papen, boyfriend of Wichita woman Julie Anderson, who was found dead in a Colorado Springs airport parking lot, was upgraded to serious condition in a Seattle hospital. He remains unconscious. a first degree murder charge stands, with prosecution awaiting his recovery. The case traces to Aug. 10 in Wichita and Aug. 17 in Colorado Springs.
On Interstate 29 south of St Joseph a 31 year old man Daniel Portenter died after apparently dozing at the wheel. His car veered into the median struck a concrete bridge railing causing the fatal crash. Cowley County plans first grand jury next month at request of Dee Dow of Arkansas City seeking inquiry into her son’s death in April 1999. The death ruled a death by own action. County Atty Gary Foiles also wants jury to consider three other cases. Dow circulated petition after the request was denied by district court judges.
Holsington officials search for new funding to pay for Clara Barton Hospital improvements amid documentation issues with a previously allocated 1.7 million from the Development Assn. fund. The project totals nearly 5 million, with officials hoping for a fresh revenue source despite doubt. Pawnee County voters will decide in November on dairying after a petition validated for the November 7 ballot. Robert Lewis led the petition effort, recalling the 1994 hogs vote that lost by three to one while the daily issue narrowly failed by 16 votes.
Charles Jacobs of the American Anti Slavery Group met U S Senator Sam Brownback at the Kansas Statehouse in Topeka to discuss anti slavery legislation. Jacobs praised the John Brown mural and noted the growing reach of abolitionist groups amid concerns about modern slavery and trafficking. Brownback supports a bill to jail traffickers for 20 years and ease slave testimony as part of a broader fight against forced labor.
