Montserrat Volcano Triggers Islandwide Evacuation
The Montserrat volcano threatens eruption for the first time in 20,000 years prompting the British colony to evacuate southern Montserrat including Plymouth. About 4,000 of 11,000 residents fled, 6,000 of the remaining 7,000 shelter in churches and schools or with friends. Evacuee stories show hardship and longing to return as locals cope with displacement.
