Isolation Booth Is Only Way To Restrain Trial Defendant
In Los Angeles California a defendant named James Merkouris, 40, restrained for sanity hearings, was placed in a soundproof isolation booth after violent outbursts in court. Jurors watched as he was strapped to a high steel chair to prevent escape while the defense, aided by deputy DA J. M. Leavy, sought to hear testimony. The booth, wired with a speaker and telephone link, allows courtroom voices to reach the defendant without disturbing others.
