Local melon growers hope for better weather next year
Douglas County farmers report a disastrous melon season due to heavy rains and anthracnose. Extension officials say soil nutrients wash away, existing fungicides fail, and popular Black Diamond melons lack resistance. Arkansas River and Kansas River valleys supply about 5000 acres. some farmers report near total losses but note markets still show decent prices for salvaged fruit.
