School district reassigns nine kindergartners to Sunset Hill

Lawrence District 497 moves nine Prairie Meadows kindergartners from Schwegler to Sunset Hill to relieve overcrowding at Schwegler and Kennedy. Utilities money dispute delays teacher pay ruling

The Kansas tax appeals board said District 497 could find extra utilities funds elsewhere and that a 134000 request was excessive. Superintendent Carl Knox cited a 40 percent rise in utilities costs and urged contingency planning for winter. ICC order ends Tonganoxie rail line in Kansas

The ICC approved Union Pacific Railroad 1976 petition to abandon 13.43 miles from Lawrence to Tonganoxie leaving Tonganoxie without rail service. The order requires keeping track for 120 days for potential public sale, then abandonment of the line with limited service remaining as a sidetrack.
