Quake Shakes Five States Centered in Cache Valley

A sharp earthquake centered near Cache Valley shook parts of five states early today. No injuries were reported. Damage included a Lewiston Utah drugstore collapse, a Crystal Furniture wall collapse in Logan, and a US 89 slide in Logan Canyon. Tremors reached Pocatello Idaho Evanston Wyoming Lander Wyoming Grand Junction Colorado and Hebpen Lake Montana.

Hoover Leaves Bed After Abdominal Operation

Former President Herbert Hoover, 88, left bed briefly at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center after a three hour abdominal operation. A hospital statement said his condition is improving and he had a restful night as pathologists studied an intestinal tumor. His two sons visited, and Hoover joked about there being no canasta that night.

Quigley Jr. Returns to Lawrence as State Safety Inspector

Ernest C. Quigley Jr., formerly of Lawrence and most recently in Russell, returns to Lawrence to serve as a state industrial safety inspector. He will oversee Douglas, Shawnee, Jefferson, Jackson and Nemaha counties and previously held the post in Russell. The family will reside at 1509 Stratford Rd. he is the son of the late E. C. Quigley, former KU athletic director.

Payroll Check Stolen from KU Graduate Student

Kansas University police report a $196 payroll check stolen from Paul A. Thomas in Room 344 Snow Hall. Thomas, a graduate student of 933 Ky St, found the check missing after returning from a trip. This is the ninth theft in the past week after eight checks were stolen from Strong Hall. investigation continues.

Hungarian doctor charged in brutal assault in San Jose

Dr Geza DeKaplany, a 36 year old anesthetist, was arrested after allegedly mutilating his wife Hanna DeKaplany with surgical instruments and nitric acid. Police found the 25 year old bound nude beside her bed crying in pain after he attacked her following accusations of infidelity. The couple had married five weeks earlier after she left a San Francisco showgirl engagement.

Internal Revenue Men Rule False Teeth Are Earnings

Kansas City AP. Dale Gasper a 25 year old barber faced a $45.07 tax bill after a two hour IRS interview over barter for his false teeth. He traded haircuts for uppers and fillings valued at $251, later reduced to $225.40, with debate over whether the dental work and clippers wear are income or deductions. Gasper says he did not intend to dodge taxes and called it an even swap.

Lawrence Teacher Named for Retarded Children Classes at Bess Stone Center

Mrs. Jesse Milan of Lawrence will lead classes for retarded children at the Bess Stone Activity Center, starting Sept. 17. An occupational therapist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka for five years, she has earned citations for her work. Classes run five days weekly with a three hour session for preschool and older children, open to area families.
