Western diplomats met for two hours in the Kremlin with Foreign Minister Molotov over Berlin blockades and Germany policy as hopeful announcements from the Big Four linger. Moscow talks continue with no communiqué yet issued.
A radio talk by Dr Fh. 7. Novets ny, superintendent of the Lawrence abhoole and a series of teachers' meetings are scheduled this week as part of the program proceeding the opening of the city's schools. Meetings include principal's meeting at 2 p.m. tomorrow, supervisors at 10 a.m. Wednesday, junior high teachers at 10 a.m. Friday, and all teachers at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Pinckney School. Board of education monthly meeting at 7:20 p.m. September 7 at the high school. Topeka County Commissioners Ed Johns on, Elmer Ousdahl and Lou Griffith went to Topeka for a public relations meeting at the city auditorium under the state board of social welfare.
Miami observers issued warnings as a compact hurricane with 115 mph winds neared the coast from Wilmington to Cape Hatteras. Forecasters predicted possible hurricane winds along the coast with the storm center about 250 miles south of Cape Hatteras and a northward drift that could threaten Virginia Capes later today. Grady Norton cautioned people to heed advisories every two hours as hurricane hunter flights confirmed the storm’s erratic path.
Cooling air from Canada lowered temperatures in many regions after a week of extreme heat with several 100 degree readings. Forecasters warned hot weather would linger in the plains and midwest, while New York reported 273 heat deaths and 42 drownings across the country.
In Greensboro Aug 30 Henry Wallace faced a hostile crowd that hurled eggs and tomatoes as an emergency police squad dispersed a group of over 1000. A brief earlier greeting in Barton, N C preceded a tense arrival. Wallace spoke about southern resources and the regional economy amid jeers and calls to return to Russia.
New York dispatch reports Whit staker Chambers testifying before a House committee. He says he obtained a $6,000 a year federal job in 1937 through communist influence and describes a close tie between pre war underground activities and wartime Soviet spy cases.
Topeka reports hot spell with temperatures from 65 to 74 expected inland while highs reached 101 in Phillipsburg. Winds to temper heat with a hotter breeze. Northern corn shows stress but crop damage not serious. no weekend rainfall observed. tomorrow’s precipitation unlikely.
Johnson leads over Stevenson by 460 votes in the Texas Democratic runoff for the U S Senate. With partial results from 254 counties, the count shows 490,908 for Johnson and 404,? Stevenson. Official winner awaits state convention certification on September 14 in Fort Worth.
A Northwest Airlines jet crashed near Winona Minnesota as a severe storm raged. Twenty seven bodies were recovered bringing the toll to 87 with many more missing. The ship bound from Chicago to Minneapolis carried 163 passengers and crew. Authorities believe a lightning strike or weather contributed to the disaster as recovery teams worked through wreckage in wooded terrain along the river.
Kaiser Frazer Corp announces a new low priced model in its 1949 line. Henry J. Kaiser says the car is complete on drafting board and at clay model stage. Introduction date depends on materials but will target the Ford Plymouth and Chevrolet field.
Washington reports the army will induct about 10,000 men in November under a peacetime draft. The call, coordinated by the selective service, will allocate quotas by state and local boards. Registrants aged 19 to 25 begin registering, with oldest birthdates inducted first. After training, draftees join combat or service units in the United States, serving 21 months active and five years inactive unless further active duty.
Sixty rural teachers gathered at Liberty Memorial High School for a four day institute for county grade schools. An arts and crafts session was led by Mia Ben Shanklin and Hugh C Bryan superintendent of Leavenworth schools spoke. India school pupils demonstrated physical education. An invitation went to rural school boards to join Wednesday morning discussions on visual education led by Mrs Ross Waulfkuhle of the University extension. Mrs Leland Young will conduct a group singing period. No sessions tomorrow morning to allow teachers to enroll pupils.
Rita Ann Funk, two, suffered a fractured skull after her hair tangled in a six wheel of a gasoline-powered vehicle at her grandfather Jake Funk's farm eight miles south of Overbrook Osage County Fair. She was taken to Atchison hospital with her parents Sir and Mrs Walter Funk by car. The serious injury occurred August 30 in Kansas.
The stock index averaging 60 issues fell to 68.6 as Lawrence Business College ovens faced September 7 guidance. The report notes a negative trading day with broad declines across sectors.
About 50 men in the 25 year old bracket registered by noon at the Douglas County board. Bruce Cameron, vice chairman, noted most first-day registrants were veterans and that non veterans would register in later dates. Registration runs through September 18 in the auditorium from 3 to 5 pm. Wayne B K Anderson was the first to register, a World War III veteran. Volunteers aided with the process as lines formed at two tables, one for veterans and one for non veterans. Officials urged careful adherence to the schedule and age groups set by Selective Service headquarters. Ogden S. Jones called for more volunteers, listing contact numbers to report. Most veterans took the process in stride, with few comments on the draft. Some 23 year old non veterans registered today and will have draft status determined after classification.
In a Saturday night collision on highway 101 a mile east of town two drivers were injured and one car demolished. Wayne Puckett a 17 year old from Route 2 drove a 1930 Chevrolet westbound into an eastbound 1947 Oldsmobile driven by Charles T Woods of 904 Louisiana street. Puckett received arm and leg injuries and was treated then released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Woods suffered a fractured rib concussion and broken kneecap and was admitted. Police described the incident as near a service station entrance at about 7:40. The farm news reported Harold Veatch a 34 year old tenant farmer was killed by a bull at Pratt Kansas. He left a widow and four children.
Washington reports the draft registration lineup for men born in 1920 to 1923, detailing registration days for those born in 1925 to 1929. It lists specific dates in September and notes registration within five days after the birthday month, with varying days for each birth cohort.
Lawrence merchants plan a late summer holiday closing with most stores shutting for Usher Day. Filling stations and drug stores will remain open while some utilities and limited Sunday fashion shops may also stay open. The two to three day break precedes the fall term start and shifts hours to 9 to 5pm on weekdays, 3am to p.m. Saturday hours remain unchanged. Des Moines reports drought and hot winds likely erase hopes for an all time corn yield. Leslie M. Carl of the crop and livestock reporting service said damage is evident and the August 1 outlook of 646,140,000 bushels with 60 bushels per acre may not hold. The existing record is 638,000,000 bushels from 1946.
Stockholm Aug. 80 The International Red Cross urged nations to outlaw bacteriological and atomic warfare. A resolution called for banning these weapons and gases, while a new convention for civilian protection in wartime was adopted unanimously at the final plenary of the fifth International Red Cross conference.
Jayhawker football squads began 1948 workouts at Memorial Stadium with 58 players checking gear and staging an unorganized morning drill on the freshman field. After noon practice continued as coaches prepare for the September 18 opener againstTCU in Lawrence.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars acquire the former Weakley Furniture site at Thirteenth and Connecticut, moving to a permanent home at Eighth and New Hampshire. Parker Buick will retain the New Hampshire street location. Three floors will host the VFW group and a lodge room, with plans to remodel for a clubhouse and recreation use. The deal follows months of negotiations among W. Ray Weakley, Tom Varser, and Parker Buick, with terms undisclosed.
