Brownback marks 50th anniversary of MLK speech ceremony
Gov. Sam Brownback joined Topeka pastor Rev. Gordon Glenn to ring a silver bell at the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site in Topeka. The ceremony observed the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s I Have a Dream speech with about 75 in attendance including Dele Adegbore, a Topeka High sophomore who delivered the speech in near 100 degree heat. The event underscored the site as a symbol of the start of civil rights progress and segregation ending, with Brownback calling the place sacred and King a prophet.
