Lansford unrest as troops confront striking workers

Aug. 29 reports from Tamagas and surrounding towns describe troops clashing with strikers at Lansford. Captain Hein of company K was injured, several strikers bayoneted, and Major Gearhart sought martial law as soldiers escorted workers and dispersed crowds.

West Virginia troop action at Thurmond amid mining unrest

In Thurmond West Virginia state troops were called to preserve order and protect property in the mining region. An assistant adjutant general was ordered to report to operators but refused to report to them, obeying sheriff directives to maintain order. A three company and auxiliary corps guard the public roads.

Kansas Miners and Operators Reach Tentative Scale

In Anteburg Pittsburg August 39 a long miners and operators' session ends with an agreed scale. Expected to be signed Saturday the pact may affect a strike against the Big Four. District No 4 includes most companies though Western Coal and Mining, Central Coal and Oak, and Santwestero Improvement may also sign. The contract largely mirrors last year with few changes. Miners win compensation for dead work and reduce powder can quantity to twelve and a half pounds from twenty five.

President Roosevelt Plans Restful Newport Park Visit

President Roosevelt spent a day in Newbury and Newport New Hampshire seeking a rest from a week of duty. He stayed at the Falls summer home of Secretary Hay and prepared to join a hunting pack owned by the late Austin Corbin of New York. A large Newport crowd welcomed him and he gave a brief address before nightfall.

A Batler Nevada dispatch reports a new strike at Mizpah ledge near Tonopah making Nye County claim the world’s richest mining camp. The ore was found 430 feet on the Mizpah axionian ledge about a mile east of the original workings, described as a practically new strike.

Embezzler Weakley Arrested in Kansas Township Case

R Weakley, who vanished five years ago after being charged with embezzling about $2600 from Cherry township Montgomery County treasurer, was arrested last night. He had a preliminary hearing today, refused to plead, and was bound over to district court. The big band fund was forfeited. He had spent most of the years in Missouri before returning to Kansas and securing a mail contract between Haxia and Phelps. He was arrested by the sheriff upon his latest return.

Farmers to Boycott Trust Asks Dealers to Fight
