University of Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod urged a rapid move to $20 million in budget cuts at a Monday town hall. He said a 5.8 percent realignment may take one to two years but will restore finances and put the university in control of its destiny.
Two men were found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in a fatal shooting at Motel 6 Lawrence while a third defendant faced a mistrial after jurors could not reach a verdict. The incident occurred about 11:30 pm near room 308 where ten men gathered prior to a planned outing.
A Kansas task force reviewing the Department for Children and Families hinted it should consider reexamining the privatized model in place since 1996 to judge whether it serves the states best interests. Recommendations from two working groups urged reform across the child welfare system as it operates under privatization with outside nonprofits placing abused and neglected children into foster care. The panel noted the need to study whether private management best serves families and state finances.
Longtime Lawrence retailer Saffees at 911 Massachusetts Street will shut its doors near year end 2018 after 37 years in business. Co-owner Steve Mercurio confirmed the closure, with its sister store Envy also closing.
