Topeka August 28 Clarence Nevins state director said Kansas WPA employment quota will be trimmed to 4500 in September from 4750 this month. About half the September jobs will be in service division projects including defense health welfare and war service sections. Another 10 percent will be in the war training program. Henry Gillum dies longtime Lawrence janitor
Henry Gillum died at his North Lawrence home after more than 60 years in Lawrence. The octogenarian served as janitor at the Douglas County courthouse for over 40 years, beginning in 1898 and moving to the present building in 1905. Born a slave in Bowling Green Missouri, he later worked at Harris country place, a wire plant, and was a member of St Luke’s AME church. Funeral set for Saturday at 3 pm at St Luke’s AME with Western Star lodge in charge. burial in Maple Grove cemetery. He is survived by son Henry H. Lawrence residents can park a trailer in their back yards by notifying the homes registration bureau of the chamber of commerce. City Clerk Harold Fisher notes many inquiries from trailer owners unsure where to park. Trailers must be registered at city hall for 31 dollars. Mrs Corneliy Bigelow reports four to five applications daily with 21 spaces rented so far. The ordinance allows one trailer per back yard outside the fire limits and requires sanitary facilities unless connected to sewer. Harvey Jetmore leads the trailer committee for the chamber.
