Reunited Sacred Red Rock Returns to Kaw Nation
The 28 ton red quartzite boulder known as I TM zhtje waxobe rests by Shunganunga Creek near Tecumseh and was carried from the Dakotas by glacier. After removal in 1929 to Lawrence, the Kaw Nation will reclaim the stone on Aug 30, restoring a sacred site and reviving lost cultural memory as officials and community members acknowledge past erasure and plan new traditions.
