The Federal mediator William E. Simkin convened a first joint meeting with steel negotiators after United Steelworkers Union rejected an industry offer raising wages and benefits by 40.6 cents an hour over three years. If no deal by midnight Tuesday, 450,000 workers may strike, halting 80 percent of output.

Elderly Alabama man found slain with tongue cut out
In Greensboro Hale County Alabama an 87 year old Perry Smaw was found battered near his farm home with his tongue cut out. Deputies hold two Negro men for questioning over groups of civil rights volunteers arrested in July. A $1000 reward was offered by Gov George Wallace for information leading to an arrest. A broken iron skillet and butcher knife were found near the bed and a rifle was missing.

One Killed Eight Hurt As Ride Leaves Track
