Veterans Administration to cut hospital beds nationwide
A VA official said on Tuesday that 3,200 hospital beds would be eliminated due to a funding cut. On July 31 the VA reported 22,550 eligible veterans on its waiting list for hospital care, with 22,001 on June 20 and 18,805 on July 31, 1951. The VA also noted 105,911 veterans in hospitals on July 31, versus 103,774 on June 30 and 103,110 on July 31, 1931. The spokesman cited a $31,122,684 cut voted by Congress in the VA budget, about 701 million dollars for medicine and surgery, prompting a reduction of 2,800 in average patient load. An additional 400 beds in other federal hospitals under contract are being given up, and four VA beds contracts with Public Health Service hospitals were terminated. No contraction of civil or state contract beds is planned. The cutback will keep beds empty and likely widen future waiting lists.
