Allied forces tighten around Bapaume as German defenders in the town face imminent surrender on the Somme front. Reports indicate the pocket is closing with Allied generals directing the operation toward a swift capitulation.
British forces advance up to four miles north and south of the Somme and Scarpe rivers. Monchy-le-Preux Guemappe Wancourt and Mary captured or advanced. Fresnoy-Roye taken by French. German resistance in Vosges repulsed as rain slows operations.
Voters in Montana head to polls tomorrow to select nominees for U S Senate in Democratic and Republican races. Incumbent J T Walsh seeks renomination in the Democratic to Senate while Republican contestants include Jeanelle Rankin and challengers Dr O M Lanstrum Edmund Nichols and Harry H Parsons. Other races see John M Evans oppose Mrs H E C MacDonald in the First District on the Democratic ticket with contests for the Second District. The Socialist vote failed to reach required quota and the Nationalist candidate Joseph Kirschwing stands for state auditor. Non partisans offered no field or endorsements.
The August 6 soldier tally from twelve training camps shows Will Johns mustering only seven more votes than Sheriff Woodward. Seventy-eight Douglas county soldiers voted, with cantons sending ballots to County Clerk Geo. C. Brune and results unchanged. The race between Johns and Woodward remains divided by margins. no candidate gains enough support to alter standings. The report also notes unrelated notices and a community invitation to a children’s party at Woodland Park.
