A Red Advance Guard engaged a Blue force near Lansing this morning and repulsed them, inflicting heavy losses. The clash disrupted enemy momentum as reports describe intensified action and casualties on the opposing side.
War experts predict a decisive clash tomorrow as the Reds, entrenched near Lansing and Fort Leavenworth, battle the Blue Army for control of the city. Reports describe Red artillery on a height ready to fire, Blues making cautious moves, and both sides preparing for a dawn assault to decide the fate of Leavenworth.
Ernest Russell of Company H E N G was hurt when a wax bullet charged by a drill passed through his foot at the Camp of the Red Army near Lansing yesterday. He was treated at the hospital and later sent to Leavenworth Post Hospital. The injury is serious, but nonfatal, and will require crutches for some time. Russell is a tailor employed at Frank Koeh shop and a member of the national guard who went on the hike last week.
The Senate passed the Penrose resolution without a roll call to have the Clapp committee investigate alleged exchanges among Archbald Perkins Roosevelt and other members. Leaders warned adjournment could come tonight, with a delay only if measures omit certain disclosures. Washington also reported budget totals for government expenses and steps to erase Sunday postal deliveries under a new appropriation signed by Taft. George W. Lerki will not testify tomorrow before Clapp on campaign fund contributions, as adjournment pressures hinder committee questioning.
A meeting of the play grounds committee at the M. O. A. rooms heard Miss Glen Emrent report strong progress in summer play, noting total enrollment 563 and average daily attendance 50. The efficient funds plan and low expenses earned broad approval for continuing next year in Lawrence.
Colonel C Wilson of United Wireless Company died last night at the United States penitentiary where he was serving a three year sentence for using nails to defraud. Poisoning was given as cause. He was 67 and had been healthy until yesterday. His young wife, married just over a year, was notified. Wilson had testified in bankruptcy proceedings against United States Wireless Company, revealing he spent over a million dollars in four years. He had been moved from New York to Atlanta prison and back amid security changes. The death leaves unsettled questions about the company and its collapse.
A weather report notes yesterday's high reached nine degrees above zero and tied or exceeded prior records twice. The thermometer peaked around noon and remained high into the afternoon while other stations showed temperatures between ten and fifteen degrees. Mrs Anna Cratchfield Cratchfield dies at her home on Vernon street after a long illness. She was born in Nashville Tennessee and married Cratehfield before moving to Lawer, later near the Six schoolhouse. Funeral is planned for Monday afternoon at three. She leaves a husband, sister Mrs Heter U West, sister Mrs Katyne Bickney of Memphis, and brother Hubert Lionside.
The Becker defense plans to argue he was the victim of a gambler’s plot. New evidence suggests police are pressing a larger conspiracy, with Flynn as lead investigator. Becker’s lawyers aim to show three months earlier a plot to murder Rosenthal arose but was abandoned by outside gamblers. Rosenthal allegedly offered $10,000 to flee to Canada rather than face killing.
A notable conference of Indian service educators will meet at Haskell September 4 for five to six days. In a Topeka letter dated August 23 1812 F M Coburn Secretary commends W R Green County Clerk for an accurate agricultural and population abstract. He notes apparent prosperity and population growth in Douglas County and wishes prosperity for its people.
Wilson plan to run limited campaign ads and skip stamping tours gained approval from campaign committee members at Democratic headquarters in New York. The governor announced three month strategy focusing on New York Pennsylvania and New Jersey with campaign efforts centered on New York and a Labor Day event in Buffalo.
A marriage license was issued today to Grover C. Polson of Hicksville Missouri and Cora Ensenie Sterling of Lawrence. A license was issued Saturday to William Ralph Cooper and Edith Pearl Head both of Topeka.
Parents and others invited to the August Exhibition in South Park tomorrow at 3 p m. Miss Gladys Elliott directs drills and two musical numbers by young children. A basketball game and races follow with Pinckney and New York playgrounds joining South Park.

Officials expect Ohio to prosecute for attempted forgery and related offenses, with hearings and requisitions underway. Three people died in a violent wind and rain storm amid widespread property damage and yacht accident injuries.
The Commercial Club plans numerous prizes and a monster parade with plans to recruit 1,000 to 2,000 participants from local labor and businesses. A large crowd attended a woodland park concert by the Thirteenth Cavalry band last night. The performance was well received as part of their ongoing series of entertainments beloved by Lawrence residents. The unit is encamped at Buxton Grove in North Lawrence and will stay until the regiment returns.
