Senate fight over calling reserves up for Vietnam
The House refused to vote special authority for President Johnson to call up individual Reservists for service in Vietnam without a national emergency declaration. The issue, added by the Senate to a defense bill, would let reserves be summoned as individuals for up to 24 months, sparking GOP and Armed Services opposition. A conference settled on keeping unit identities and considering family and economic status, while Pentagon outlined a new training program for previously disqualified draftees.
