County Budget Hearing Set Over Proposed Tax Increase
Douglas County leaders will hold a public hearing Wednesday at the regular commission meeting on the 2022 budget. The draft budget totals 148.5 million dollars and would raise property taxes by about 1 mill, equating to roughly 23 dollars more annually for a 200000 home. Changes to the fire and medical funding with the City of Lawrence boost the county share by about 2.6 million, with additions including 1.2 million for social services, 1.1 million for employee pay, and several new positions. The commission had earlier trimmed the increase from 17 mills to fit reserve funds, with the vote on the draft budget set for Wednesday.
