Aman prosecutors said a thirst for political power drove Byron Looper to shoot state Sen Tommy Burks near a pumpkin patch on Oct 19 1998. Looper, 35, was convicted of Burks death and sentenced to life without parole in a jury trial in Crossville. Burks was the favorite to win the 1998 election and was shot while parked at a farm to take schoolchildren on a hayride.
