The Army announced the first flight of the XV3 Convertiplane designed to combine helicopter and airplane features. Built by Bell Aircraft at Fort Worth, the craft lifted straight up, flew in all directions, with forward flight to be tested later. Lawrence firemen were called Tuesday afternoon to the Delta Gamma Sorority house at 1001 High Drive where a trash fire had ignited grass. They discovered a 2-inch underground gas line leaking toward the Sigma Nu Fraternity house at 945 Em ery Road and avoided an explosion. The leak at the Albert Bloch residence on 1015 Ala. St. ignited before escape could prevent a blast.
