A 4 year old named Philip Hildebrand disappeared while playing in the river below the north side bridge. Otto Gulley, 9, was saved as rescuers rushed from the fire station with the pulmotor. The search lasted minutes with no body found, and officials concluded the child had drowned in the deep water around 3 o'clock.
State Fire Marshal L. T. Hussey plans a traveling exhibit for the Kansas Free Fair in Topeka September 11 to 16 and the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson September 16 to 22. The display will feature charts pictures and literature on fire plus small chemical extinguishers and a live firefighter to explain them. Exhibits will be housed in tents with aims to assist and inform visitors.
Lennion August 24 The Registrar General reports 1920 as the year with the highest marriage rate 20.2 per thousand and births 25.5 per thousand totaling 957782 the largest since civil registration began illegitimate births rising along with legitimate death rate at 12.9 per thousand and infant mortality dropping to 80 per 1000.
Lawrence Kiwanis will feature Haskell Institute at the district convention in Topeka in September. The Haskell band and a float will be entered in the parade. The Kiwanis board decided to register the entire Lawrence club for attendance during the two day session.
Riley County commissioners let contracts for ten new bridges totaling 12 761.70 dollars. The awards cover multiple spans and include work on county roads across the Manhattan area.

Prosecutor Gore announced extradition would be sought for William Z Foster, ex steel strike leader arrested in Chicago, as the group faces criminal conspiracy charges.
Kansas City records an official 102 at 2 PM matching the hottest day since 1918. In Parsons the sun hit 120, while KU reported 101 at 1 PM. Downtown streets felt markedly hotter, with business folk seeking lunch amid scarce breeze and farmers warning corn beds cannot endure more heat.
Ed Cahill, brother in law of R C Manley, buys a large stake in Hustmyre wholesale grocery in Orange Texas and will head the sales department. Miss Della Richardson of Kansas City Mo becomes the new operator at the Western Union Telegraph office here replacing IT. T. Rice who left for Des Moines to head the sales department and assist the superintendent. Rice will return in about two weeks for his family.
The fair board met in Chamber of Commerce rooms and approved starting construction of a new barn this week to handle overflow race entries this fall at Woodland Park. Funds are not yet raised. canvassing will begin, with some money previously raised by board members. The next meeting is set for Tuesday afternoon at the Chamber rooms.
Clyde melon grower Henry Moorehouse appointed to handle all shipments for the Clyde Melon Growers Cooperative. About 400 acres of melons near Clyde are ready for market and will be shipped through the association.
Wilder S. Metcalf of Lawrence will be the principal speaker at a large American Legion post barbecue in Council Grove on August 31. Plans include the butchering of two beef cattle for the event.
A letter from W. J. Flintom recounts Charles H. Tucker's one day visit in San Diego on August 17. Lawrence residents Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Busch hosted and toured Tucker to Balboa Park, high school, a $150000 stadium, La Jolla, and the Gillispie sanatorium before a Palace Cafe dinner with Gen J. Roberts. Mrs. Sample and others attended the San Francisco bar convention afterward.
Dodge City Kansas August 24 Unanimous resolutions at the Southwestern Veterans reunion call for a veteran bonus. They seek $10 a day for each day of service from Kansas for state payment and urge national payments for veterans in other states via the governor elect, state legislature and national congress.
Atlanta Aug 24 The Georgia Senate committee on wild lands considers a bill by Senator Dennis Fleming to require husband approval from wives before fishing. The measure, mocked by Hudson Maxim in a letter to S. G. McLendon, cites alleged drastic provisions. Maxim notes it may be a joke and cites his lawless legislation book research.
Hutchinson sponsors Booster Day on August 24 urging a big turnout. Merchants told to release many employees to ensure a large crowd, aiding the club financially for the season.
