Downtown Lawrence retail balance shifts toward south city
A study titled Retail Market Dynamics shows downtown Lawrence and West 23rd Street each account for about 18 percent of city retail sales, while South Iowa Street handles roughly twice that amount. With Kohl's, Penney's and Sears opening nearby, debate grows over preserving downtown vitality versus growth elsewhere. The KU urban planning professor warns too much outside development could hurt older commercial cores, making downtown's future a careful balancing act. The report notes demand for central city housing waning, favoring distant apartments with better amenities, yet downtown remains a valued social and shopping hub and a target for smaller national and local stores. Downtown's future hinges on measured growth and preserving its role as a social center.
